Trump would deserve Nobel prize if he helps resolve Kashmir dispute: Aziz

ISLAMABAD: Sartaj Aziz on Tuesday said United States president-elect Donald Trump would deserve the Nobel prize if he succeeds in resolving the Kashmir dispute.

Responding to the offer of US president-elect Donald Trump to mediate between Pakistan and India, Aziz said: “Trump would deserve the Nobel prize if he helps resolve the Kashmir dispute.”

Further, speaking to the media he hinted that he plans to attend the Heart of Asia conference in India and suggested the visit could be used to defuse the tension between the two countries.

The adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs’ trip to India would be the first by a senior official since gunmen raided an army base in Indian Occupied Kashmir and killed 19 soldiers in September, an attack New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.

The killing of Indian soldiers soured relations and led to a weeks of diplomatic quarrelling, with both Islamabad and New Delhi accusing opposing diplomats of spying and then expelling them.

“Its a good opportunity to defuse the tension,” Sartaj told PTV. However, he added that there was no official meeting scheduled with any Indian officials. “Its early to say. Depends upon the situation,” he said.

The Heart of Asia conference focusing on Afghanistan is due to be held in the first week of December in Amritsar.
