I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.

–Charlotte Bronte

Charlotte Bronte’s world famous book was published on 16th of November in 1847. Born to a clergyman, Bronte sisters had the good fortune of acquiring an education. This education enabled her to procure the position of a teachers and later a governess. However, writing remained to be the main passion for her life-at first as an escape from the dreariness of her miserable life as a teacher and later as a way to grieve the unexpected loss of her three family members within the limited span of eight months. Most of her early work was published under various pseud-names. It was only after the success of her various novels was Charlotte Bronte able to reveal her true identity and gender. Struggles likes these were common for women writers of that time, many of whom choose to write under masculine names to avoid the backlash from the society.
