Walk educates public about diabetes

SARGODHA-The Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Sargodha, organized an awareness walk and a screening camp here at the varsity’s main campus in connection with World Diabetes Day.
The purpose of the walk was to create awareness among the masses regarding harms of diabetes and precautions for its prevention. “Let’s beat diabetes through food and nutrition” was theme of the walk.
Hundreds of students and faculty members including Dean Faculty of Agriculture Dr Afzal, Dean Faculty of Science Dr Nazra Sultana, Chairman Department of Food Science and Nutrition Dr Anjum and Director Students Affairs Ejaz Asghar Bhatti participated in the walk. Pamphlets were distributed on the occasion. A free camp was established for diabetes test where a number of students got their blood sugar level examined.
Speaking on the occasion, speakers said that diabetes is the disease which causes highest number of deaths in the world. Citing International Diabetes Federation and World Health Organization, they said a person dies from diabetes complications every seven seconds. There are currently 5 million people worldwide who are patients of diabetes.
Dr Nazra Sultana said that the best way to control diabetes is consumption of healthy foods and regular exercise. Women and children should be more careful in this regard, she added. “Healthy life is the basic right of every human being. By adopting precautionary measures, diabetes can be avoided,” she pointed out.
