LAHORE The 71st Punjab Games have lured in Samsung at the major sponsor for the three-day sporting extravaganza to be staged at different venue of the city. Addressing a press conference here after the provincial sports secretaries meeting, PbOA president Syed Shahid Ali informed that the games would now be named as Samsung Punjab Games. Though he did not reveal the amount of the sponsorship, but he said that Samsung will be bearing all the expenses of the games. SVP PbOA Iftikhat Malik, secretary Idris Haider Khawaja, Director General Punjab Sports Salman Ijaz and several other officials were also present during the press conference. Khawaja Idris informed that 26 disciplines will be contested during the October 24 to 26 activity. He said that they had put into place 18 events for men and eight for females. A good number of about 2600 athletes and officials will take part in the event, he added. Although the opening and closing ceremonies will be kept simple but its dress rehearsal will be held a day before the start of the games, he added. He said that all the nine divisions of the province have been directed to form strong teams after holding divisional competitions. Speaking on the occasion, DG Salman Ijaz said that they have got the security clearance for holding the games and this time they will be held as scheduled. There will be no delay or postponement as everything has been finalised and the government has also allowed us to hold the event, he added. He further stated that the players would be accommodated at three locations. We have booked rooms in hotels while arrangements have also been made at the National Hockey Stadium and the Punjab Stadium hostel rooms, he said. He further said that a separate enclosure would also be established to provide medical facility to the players and officials.
