QUETTA The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which has been making efforts for last two years to gain maximum ground in Balochistan, have intensified its activities in the run for next general elections. The party failed to win any seat in 2008 general elections, which it said was mainly due to massive rigging, but now many tribal elders and political bigwigs are ready to join the folds of PML-N, according to the party sources. The sources said that these leaders, who would join the party in the near future, have been attracted mainly because of PML-Ns bold policies on national issues and its pro-people stance on the issues of the restive province. Another major reason of this political advance is recent visits of PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif and other senior leaders to Quetta and strengthening of party structure in the province. Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif also paid two important visits to Balochistan. Besides announcing construction of a modern cardiac hospital for the people of Balochistan, he doubled the seats of Balochistan students in the Punjab institutions. Nawaz Sharif will soon pay a visit to Quetta and different personalities are expected to join PML-N, a senior PML-N leader told The Nation, adding that PML-N chief had also met BNP chief Sardar Akthar Mengal in Dubai and leaders of National Party for seat adjustments in the next elections. There are around 18 members of PML-Q in Balochistan Assembly and majority of them want to join PML-N, but some problems are hindering their joining the Nawaz league. Some of the members had apprised the Nawaz during their meeting with him about their intentions but there are legal hurdles in their way, said another PML-N source. Keeping in view the gains of PML-N in Balochistan, political analysts are of the opinion that if no obstacles are created in partys way it would emerge as a major force in the next elections because PPP has failed to come up to the expectations of the people. PML-N leader Khudai Noor Khan said that PML-N candidate Sardar Yaqoob Khan Nasar had won an NA seat in 2008 elections from Loralai with a majority of more than 10,000 votes but his success was changed into defeat by the authorities as he had refused to change his loyalties. Later, the courts decided in favour of Sardar Yaqoob Khan as massive rigging was detected. Victory to several other PML-N candidates was also denied under the directives of Musharraf, he maintained. However, before the court decided in favour of Sardar Yaqoob, an independent MNA Lt-Gen (r) Abdul Qadir and two MPAs, Sardar Sanaullah Zehri and Captain (r) Abdul Khaliq, had joined the party. And these men succeeded in bringing Chengez Marri in the party folds as well. Sardar Sanaullah Zehri is one of the influential tribal elders in province while Chengez Marri is son of the Baloch nationalist leader Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri.
