SRINAGAR - This Eid-ul-Adha may not bring much joy to the valley which has witnessed over 30 percent decline in general business on Eid.

Members from business fraternity said besides other factors, inflation has given a blow to business on Eid. Nazir Ahmad, former president Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry told Kashmir Times that there has been a decline in overall business across Kashmir this Eid.

"Over 30 percent decline has been seen. The major reason is inflation. Cost of living is getting high while purchasing power has not changed," Nazir said. He added that since tourism and horticulture also remained affected this year, it had a direct bearing on over all business.

"Besides, there have been come violent incidents this year which also made an impact." He said the income of employees and businessmen has more or less remained same while prices have shot up. "It is becoming difficult for people to spend money." Mushtaq Ahmad, a shopkeeper selling ready made garments in Lal Chowk said his sales declined by 20 percent this Eid. "People hardly came to shop for clothes. They preferred buying essentials like food items." He said the hiking prices of commodities have forced people to choose carefully before spending money. Another shopkeeper, Mohammad Ramzaan, added that usually business would pick up weeks ahead of Eid. "But this time we saw people shopping just two-three days before Eid. They are spending judiciously." Meanwhile, hustle and bustle could be seen in the markets with Eid just a day away.

The markets were abuzz with customers who could mostly be seen shopping from road side venders. Colorful clothes, variety of bakery, sweets and other items have filled the markets. Beeline of people could be seen on bakery shops from early morning. People from across the valley are thronged to Srinagar to shop for Eid.

The markets have been decorated with lights and flowers. Special Eid offers and discounts have been put to attract the customers. People are mostly involved in buying livestock for the sacrifice on Eid.
