SIALKOT  - Over 16.5 million acres of land will be brought under wheat crop during Rabi season in the province and the Punjab Agriculture department has finalized all arrangements in this regared.  The step has been taken to make the ‘grow more wheat drive’ successful in the province and under the programme special attention was being paid on bringing maximum land under wheat crop.  Apart from, this special competitions would also be held for wheat growers across the Punjab and special awards would be given to the farmers for producing maximum wheat.

It is expected that 31 maund per acre wheat would be produced during the season in the Punjab, the sources said.

   The wheat growers have been directed that they should use only recommended varieties of seed for obtaining maximum yield of the crop. Wheat would be cultivated over 517,000 acres of land in Sialkot district. Tehsil wise break-up of wheat cultivation is as under: 118,000 acres in Daska, 75000 acres in Sambrial, 171,000 acres in Pasrur and 154,000 acres in Sialkot tehsils of the district.

   The Agriculture department has initiated ‘Farmers Training Programme’ in 1431 villages of Sialkot district aimed at introducing latest wheat growing techniques among the growers. Besides, special training programme has also been prepared for imparting training to growers about the utilization of pesticides, fertilizers, natural cultivation techniques and seeds at village level in the district.

Special teams of agriculture department would visit village to village for creating awareness about the proper use of fertilizer, irrigation and pesticides among the wheat growers of the district.

   Special step has also been taken for checking the sale of fake and substandard pesticides and fertilizer. The Sialkot district administration has adopted solid measures for ensuring quality pesticides and fertilizers to the wheat growers in the district, sources added.
