LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that officers of the Punjab government and his political companions had set an unprecedented example of serving the calamity-stricken people during the worst flood of countrys history. The chief minister was addressing the government officers who performed their duties in various districts during the flood at the Civil Secretariat, here on Wednesday. Senior Adviser Sardar Zulfiqar Ali Khosa, Provincial Law Minister Rana Sanaullah, Members of Provincial and National Assembly, Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police were also present on this occasion. He said that if the same spirit lives on, no obstacle could impede the progress and prosperity of the country. He said the first phase of relief and rescue of affectees had been completed successfully and the next challenge was their rehabilitation and reconstruction, and Inshallah, this task will also be completed successfully. The CM said flood had caused a vast devastation due to which 90 per cent of the poorest of the poor were affected who had lost their lifelong earnings and belongings. He said the Punjab government was utilising all resources for the relief of affectees and from day one, government officers and public representatives are serving the flood-affected people. He said some people thought that political leadership of Punjab and the administration were not capable of handling this challenge, but their hope shattered. He said that services of administrative officers, divisional commissioners, DCOs, police and other departments during the flood were commendable. He said the rehabilitation of flood affectees was a challenge for the well-off people and it was the need of the hour that they should come forward to help the affectees in this testing time. He said that if negligence and carelessness were shown in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction, then it will be difficult to pacify the rage of affectees which would sweep away everything. He said that the whole nation will have to play its role in the rehabilitation of affectees. He said that the federal government was also cooperating with the Punjab government in the relief and rehabilitation of the flood affectees and distribution of cash aid had been started in affected areas. He said that officers and elected representatives had worked collectively for the relief of flood affectees and if the same spirit was displayed in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction, then this difficult task will be accomplished easily. He said that development projects were being prioritised in the wake of flood and austerity measures will be promoted in the province and every penny thus saved, will be spent on the flood affectees. Earlier, Chief Secretary Nasir Mehmood Khosa, while speaking on the occasion, said that the role of the CM Punjab in providing relief to the affectees was a role model for the officers. He said that provision of relief to affectees was a challenge for bureaucracy and it met this challenge efficiently.
