ISLAMABAD PML-Q MNA, Sheikh Waqas Akram while alleging Punjab Police informed a NA body that personnel of banned outfits armed with weapons were visiting police stations as well as DPO office in his home district Jhang and the local police was reluctant to take action against them. The police accommodates the members of banned outfits like Sipah-e-Sihaba Pakistan (SSP) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi but I am being politically victimised, he said. The high handedness and political victimisation of Punjab Police came under fire in the National Assemblys Standing Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges and the committee has summoned Inspector General of Police (IGP) as well as Secretary Establishment to seek reply as to why a parliamentarian was barred to enter into a DPO office. The parliamentarians were of the view that the privilege motion should be made a test case as many cases have surfaced about the high handedness and violence of Punjab Police. The committee that met under the chairmanship of Nadeem Afzal Chan here on Wednesday in the Parliament House was hearing the privilege motion of Sheikh Waqas Akram. Sheikh Waqas had raised the question of privilege against District Police Officer (DPO) Jhang and other police officers for not allowing him to enter the DPO office, thrashing of his personal assistant and allegedly illegal sealing off of his factory office by the Jhang police. He told the committee that DPO was reluctant to attend his phone calls and the local police was politically victimising him. He informed that police guards deputed at the entry point of the Jhang DPO office did not allow him to enter the office but DPO did not take any action for breaching the privilege of the Parliament despite his repeated requests. MNA, Raza Hayat Haraj while taking exception of the issue was of the view that the protocol of the parliamentarians stood higher even than any officer of grade 22 enjoying the highest portfolio in the civil bureaucracy and IGP Punjab as well as Secretary Establishment should be summoned to seek reply as to why the parliamentarians were being disallowed from entering into public offices. Waqas Akram also said that Station House Officer (SHO), Police Station Saddar Jhang also thrashed his personal assistant in the premises of police station over a minor issue and kept him behind the bars. The local police has booked and arrested his real brother under the terrorism charges while personnel of banned outfits are roaming freely and police has not ever dared to arrest them despite that they are wanted by the police in the charges of terrorism, he added. He said that police sealed off his ghee mill office in Jhang and he was not allowed to enter the office despite repeated efforts. He also alleged that police raided the place of his personal business, a private bus stand and seized licenced weapons from the office as well as arrested many of his employees there including hid real brother on the charges of firing. But a firing incident that took place in the Markaz of SSP but the police never arrested any accused till yet despite the passage of many months, he said. DPO Jhang, Dr Rizwan informed the committee that the parliamentarian was never barred to enter his office but the police guards had only prevented the personal and official guards of Waqas Akram for displaying weapons openly. About the thrashing of Waqass personal assistant, he said that the police only detained the assistant for using abusive language against SHO and later the matter was resolved amicably. He also told the committee that the police had only sealed off the bus stand owned by MNA after a firing incident took place there but the police was not in the knowledge that an office of ghee mill was located in the same building. He also said that all bus stands in that area including that of Waqas Akram were being operated illegally.
