KARACHI - Following the tragic incident of fire in garment factory, which claimed over 250 lives in Karachi, the Labour Department of Sindh government has issued directives to the owners of all the factories to get registered industrial units with one week.

The Sindh Labour Department has no concrete data of industrial units, so following the sad incident of inferno factory, the department has planned to registered all the factories and ensure implementation of labour laws for safety of employees.

Provincial Secretary of Labour Department Arif Elahi issued these directives through written notification. After the incident, the Labour and Industries departments of the provincial government came under criticism from every section of society for their failure in implementation of labour laws for safety of employees. Later, the minister of industries department Rauf Siddique while accepting responsibility of his department had resigned from the ministry.

Meanwhile, the secretary labour department while talking to the media at a local hotel has said that the investigation of the inferno in factory was in process. He said that the labour department will rehabilitate the victim families, while training and scholarships would be given to 500 families especially youth and other family members of the victims, who lost their lives in the tragic incident of inferno, in first phase of the rehabilitation phase. The secretary said that the youth of victim families will be provided jobs on priority basis, besides the six months’ salaries to the legal heirs of victims would be given regularly with the help of ILO.

 He, however, further said that the half salary for another six months will also be given to the victims’ legal heirs, the provincial secretary added. The secretary vowed that the inspection of factories would be done on regular basis to ensure the safety and facilities for the employees under labour laws.

Meanwhile, Sindh Employees Social Security Institution (SESSI) in an official statement issued on Saturday said that its head office at NIPA Chowrangi would remain open 24 hour to facilitate the heirs of workers killed in recent factory fire tragedy in Karachi.

SEESSI has requested the legal heirs of the workers registered with SESSI to contact on telephone numbers 021-99244103, 021-99244101 and 34960655 to get their social security benefits. They can also visit the camp office of SESSI at the premises of inferno factory, where camp has been established to facilitate the employees.
