A step towards improvement

The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in general, and the Minister of Health, Shaukat Yousafzai, in particular are worth admiration for a superb step of introducing Institutional Management Councils (IMCs) for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa four tertiary public hospitals of Peshawar to ensure transparency and merit in recruitment and purchase. This most commendable step in this regard is the appointment of apolitical persons of repute as members of the IMCs.
The previous government of KP appointed their own blue-eyed members in these councils. The current list of members for the IMCs has men of good repute among the Pakistanis in general and the residents of KP in particular. Now almost certainly merit will prevail in running the affairs of these four tertiary public hospitals, and as consequence of which patients, availing medical services in these hospitals will benefit. The CM of KP, and Shaukat Yousafzai as Minister of KP Health, must not stop there, and do more by appointing other persons of good reputation, integrity, and competence, as members of IMCs for the main district public hospitals. District Headquarters and Teaching hospitals which need the services of these IMCs badly. The free medical services announced by the PTI KP government are not benefiting fully the needy in the absence of this institution; the black sheep in the medical field in these district public hospitals need to be regulated, put on the right track, which can best be done by these IMCs.
