Paramount Pictures just confirmed something huge. The Godfather is being remade. Yes, after 44 years of reigning king, the movie that immortalized Marlon Brando is getting a modern facelift. The movie will be under the command of director Francis Ford Coppola, the same director of the 1972 film. And what's more, Vito Corleone is being played by Johnny Depp, The Portly Gazelle reported.

The rumors about a remake have been circulating for a while now and, as expected, everything from violent reactions to jaded submissions was heard in social media and forums. Some contend that Marlon Brando's legacy will be tainted by the mere creation of a remake. Others think that Johnny Depp will not live up to expectations, no matter his talent that has been proven time and time again.

But the remake will happen and it is slated for next year already. According to Coppola, he had been mulling over a remake since 2002 but could not find an actor who would do the role justice. He had this to say:

"You know when you got a film as successful and as influential as The Godfather, there's this unspoken rule in Hollywood that you've got to make a remake and relaunch the story for a new generation. I am not ashamed of this, it's what we do in Hollywood and it's a great opportunity to create a new exciting version.

"This project has been on the drawing board for almost 15 years and I was just about to give up on it until 2010 when I saw The Tourist in the cinemas and saw Depp's energy and fire, I knew I wanted him to be Vito Corleone. Five years later, we are well into production and are expecting a 2016 release. Working with Depp is a blessing and he is really nailing his role!"

The remake will have the same plot but will be told in a different way. For one, it will be set in modern times, and by the time of release that means 2016. Coppola adds, "As much as some of my guys just want to do The Godfather scene by scene with the same script out of laziness, there is no way I'm venturing out on this journey without really refreshing the film and its story."

"For example, this remake is not set in the 1940's but in 2016 and obviously there are going to be differences because of the era. I think both fans of The Godfather and those who are new to the story will love what we are doing here."
