KARACHI - Police on Thursday arrested an alleged militant and recovered explosives, weapons and a snatched cops rifle after an encounter which took place here in the limits of Sohrab Goth police station. Police sources revealed that police, on routine patrolling, tried to intercept a suspicious car near Supermarket, Malik Agha Hotel when the culprits resorted indiscriminate firing on the police party. Source added that the exchange of fire has been continued when some extra police contingent reached the spot and arrested an alleged militant, Shino, who hailed from Bajaur, NWFP while his four accomplices were managed to escape during the exchange of fire. Talking to The Nation, DSP Iftikhar Lohdi said that it would be early to comment as the investigation was underway. He added that police have recovered a 7mm rifle and two TT pistols from his possession. On the other side police sources said that police had recovered a Kalashnikov, a 222 rifle, two TT pistols and hand grenades. They pointed out police have also recovered three magazines of SMG that has been snatched by police constable Sharif couple of weeks ago and the higher officials suspended the concerned SHO Nasir Lohdi. Police have registered three separate FIRs 261/262/263/2009 under sections 353/324/13-D and 4/5 explosive act. DSP Lohdi had yet not confirmed the recovery of hand grenades while believed that the arrested man was involved in criminal activities but the FIR under explosives act shown the recovery of explosives. It is pertinent to mention here that a suicide bomber, hailed from the same area, had reached a bank located within the premises of New Sabzi Mandi and killed a security personnel deployed there. Various other incidents which took place in the said area are showing the presence of militants. Law enforcement agencies are reluctant to take any action against the militants and criminal groups surviving in the said town and robbing number of people on daily basis. It is also to be noted here that mostly displaced families of NWFP are settled in the said town and number of militants and criminal elements were also getting shelter in the slums of the Gadap Town. Police source claimed that the arrested man identified as Asmat-ullah Mehsud had closed relation with outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Chief Baitullah Mehsood.
