LAHORE - The Punjab Olympics Association has taken serious note of the illegal possession of sporting facilities in the city and would be taking up the issue with the Chief Minister Punjab. Talking to journalists here after the general council meeting of the PbOA, its president Syed Shahid Ali, secretary Idris Haider Khawaja and Iftikhar Malik informed that the meeting discussed in details the provincial teams preparation for participation in the Peshawar's National Games. Idris said that he would be taking up the issue of the possession of Baba Ground, the only facility for nearly 700,000 population of Krishan Nagar area. The ground where hundreds of young children play different sports is being now used for parking of Civil Secretariat and People's House vehicles. They further informed that Punjab Games will be held in the provincial capital on October 10 to 12 at the Punjab Stadium. "The lack of facilities at other cities of the province has compelled us to hold the Games at Lahore. We would also ask the government to improve the facilities in other cities to provide solid base to sport," said Idris. On the National Games, he said that they discussed in details the teams preparation for the event in Peshawar and on April 25 secretary sports Punjab will be meeting the secretaries of the sports associations to decide the disciplines of participation and the date of camp training. "The camp trainees will be given all lodging and boarding facilities during the training and will be given best coaching regimen," he added. He further said that Inter-School and Colleges Games were an instant success and the association is planning to hold it in the coming October and November. "It provides base to various sports and fills the void created by outgoing players in the national front," he said. He further said that the association gets only Rs 90,000 as government fund for 33 associations which speaks volume of the struggle these sports associations have to undergo to make both ends meet. "We would make request to the CM for the increase of funds just for the betterment of sports," he added. On parallel bodies, the PbOA secretary said that efforts are on to shun the practice and soon there will be single body of each sport running the association.
