Impediments

US President Barak Obama, our Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and the Nuclear Security Summit have been hitting the headlines in the print and electronic media the world over. Pakistans nuclear programme, nuclear assets safety and security etc has also figured quite prominently during Prime Minister Gilanis meeting with President Obama. Prime Ministers address to the Nuclear Security Summit was also appreciated as he presented Pakistans case quite forcefully. He was also able to justify Pakistans hectic search for civil nuclear technology in order to overcome the debilitating energy crisis in his country. But all said and done, the PM seems to have intentionally or otherwise avoided mention of Dr Aafiya Siddiqui and Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. But he must have privately taken up both the cases with his host President Obama and other senior officials of the US administration. Dr Aafiya Siddiqui is imprisoned in the US on a charge which she has been denying all these years and nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khans alleged nuclear smuggling and proliferation, though a thing of the past after his network being broken, still links his name with nuclear proliferation. The elements inimical to Pakistans interests want to exploit this to their advantage. Both these names are impediments to better Pak-US relations. -IKRAMUL HAQ QAZI, Lahore, April 15.
