Rawalpindi: An accountability court in Rawalpindi today issued a notice to former president Asif Ali Zardari in the assets reference case, after the National Accountability Bureau pleaded the court to reopen the case.

NAB Prosecutor Raja Khurram Ejaz contended before the accountability judge, Raja Akhlaq Hussain that since the presidential immunity against Zardari has expired, the reference against him may be reopened. The court while accepting the plea, issued notice to the former president to appear in person in the court on April 27.

The assets reference against Zardari and the late Benazir Bhutto was filed, during the tenure of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 2001. In 2010, the hearing into the reference case was deferred for indefinite period, after Zardari assumed charge as president. The late Bhutto’s name was also dropped from the reference after her death.
