MULTAN-The Food Department has started accepting applications from wheat growers for issuance of gunny bags and the process will continue till 5pm on April 20.

Issuance of the gunny bags will begin from April 24, disclosed Haq Nawaz Chohan, Deputy Director Food.

Briefing the Commissioner Multan division here on Monday, he further disclosed that 48 wheat procurement centres have been made functional in Multan division to purchase targeted 673,000 matric tonnes of wheat across the division at a cost of Rs13,00 per 40kg.

Giving details, he said that as many as 17 centres have been set up in Multan district; 12 Vehari; 14 Khanewal and five Lodhran. He said that wheat growers applying for gunny bags have to attach their NIC copy with their application besides mentioning their contact number.

He declared that small land holders would be given preference in allotment of gunny bags and the growers with up to 10 acres would be given bags. He disclosed that scrutiny of the application would be carried out on April 21 and 22 and later on names of successful applicants would be uploaded on the website of Punjab Information Technology Board. He said that issuance of gunny bags would begin from April 24 and the applicants would have to deposit security worth Rs152 against each gunny bag and Rs36 polythene bag.

Earlier, while chairing a meeting, the Commissioner Bilal Ahmad Butt directed concerned officials to ensure availability of all facilities at wheat procurement centres. He directed Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners to personally visit centres in their concerned districts and tehsils on daily basis to resolve problems faced by the farmers. He issued order for installation of computerised weighing machines and CCTV cameras at all centres besides arrangements for parking and security.
