CDA gives another 3 months

ISLAMABAD - The bosses of Capital Development Authority (CDA) have finally waked up to the call of motorists to replace the steel barrier with the concrete speed breaker to avoid road accidents at the college stop on Islamabad Highway. The Authority had earlier installed steel barriers at the Highways college stop between Zero Point and highway signal to facilitate pedestrians movement but the motorists were extremely complaining of the said barrier as it disrupted the balance of moving vehicles and one had to completely bring down the speed to cross it. The barrier had further increased the risk of accidents instead of facilitating the pedestrians. At the time when the steel barrier was installed, the CDA bosses said the arrangement was temporary and that they had ordered the Heavy Mechanical Complex (HMC), Taxila, for an overhead bridge to be installed at the college stop. But after lapse of several months, the bridge did not appear on the scene but the steel barrier was replaced with the concrete speed breaker. When asked CDA Member (Engineering) Tahir Shamshad on Sunday, he said the steel barrier was harmful for smooth flow of traffic and further enhanced the chances of road accidents instead of minimising it. Therefore, the barrier has been replaced with the concrete speed breaker, he said. When enquired as to why the CDA was not so far been able to install a pedestrians bridge at the spot to facilitate the students of nearby situated H-8/4 College of Commerce and numerous other educational institutions, the official said that a concrete bridge at the said spot is part of the project of Zero Point Interchange so CDA deemed it fit not to waste money over the steel pedestrians bridge. The concrete bridge would be constructed within next three months, the official assured, adding that they had ordered HMC for the steel bridge but cancelled the order subsequently. It is pertinent to mention here that students of the H-8/4 commerce college were since long demanding for installation of a pedestrians bridge but the city managers always turned deaf years to their demand. It was only after occurring of an accident in which a student of intermediate classes lost his life that the CDA bosses waked up and as emergency arrangement installed a steel barrier at the college stop. The barrier was Sunday replaced with the concrete speed breakers but the problem could only be solved after installation of a pedestrians bridge for which the city bosses are giving one and another date.
