MARDAN - At least 20 persons died and many more sustained injuries, as 450 houses were damaged due to flood in the areas of Mardan and Swabi on late Saturday night. According to details, heavy rains caused flood in the rural areas of Mardan and Swabi and several villages came under water. About 450 houses were damaged and a large number of cattle drowned in the floodwater. Many bridges connecting various parts of these villages were also destroyed in the flood. According to sources, seven deaths have been confirmed in Ghalyara till filing of this report. Likewise nine persons went missing in Garyala, two in Kaganau Camp, two in Balagarhi area of Mardan and two in Ismailia. The deaths mainly occurred due to collapse of roofs. In Mardan district, the most affected areas included Rustam, Shahbaz Ghari, Bala Ghari, Kalo Khan, Ghalyara, Machi, Gari Dawlatzai and Gari Ismailzai. With the help of locals, the trapped people in the flood-hit areas were rescued and shifted to safer places. Besides, the government and non-governmental organisations, volunteers, army and police also took part in the rescue activities. The injured were rushed to the nearby hospitals. In Swabi district, the affected areas were Ismailia, Kalu Khan, Khat Kalay, Sheraghand and Nazar Kalay. Not only this, several bridges were damaged while traffic between Swabi and Mardan remained suspended for the whole day.
