islamabad - Pakistani universities have awarded their highest number of PhD degrees in five years, education officials revealed yesterday.

More than 5,500 doctorates were awarded with the highest number of degrees i.e. 1351 were awarded in 2014.

The number of PhD degrees awarded in 2010 stands at 832. Likewise, 1024, 1118, 1211 and 1351 degrees were awarded in the next four years respectively.

As per official information here on Sunday, a total of 25,812 fresh students were enrolled in PhD programme and 180,079 were enrolled in MS/MPhil programme in universities during the aforesaid period. The year-wise enrolment has revealed that during year 2010-11, the number of PhD students enrolled was 3,059 while the number of MS/MPhil students was 21,167.

During year 2011-12, the number of PhD and MS/MPhil enrolment stood at 4,117 and 26,883 respectively, while during the year 2012-13 the number of PhD students was 4,729 and MS/MPhil students was 36,533.

Similarly, during the year 2013-14, the number of PhD and MS/MPhil enrolment in universities reached 6,215 and 41,349 respectively while in 2014-15, the number of PhD enrolment was 7,692 and students was 54,147.

Moreover, a total of 2,265 PhD degree holders have been provided employment in universities under Interim Placement of Fresh PhDs Programme since January, 2011.

As per year-wise breakup, during year 2010-11, the number of interim placement of fresh PhDs was 300, during 2011-12 the number was 483 and during 2012-13 the number was 499.

Similarly, the number of interim placement of fresh PhDs was 499 during 2013-14 and 484 placements in 2014-15. These placements under Interim Placement of Fresh PhD Programme (IPFP) included both Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholars as well as Non-Higher Education Commission (HEC) scholars.
