Imran Khan’s maiden speech as PM: ‘no NRO with dacoits’

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan was elected as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan on Friday after the PTI leader secured 176 votes in the National Assembly while his opponent, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif received 96 votes.

Imran Khan, whose party swept the July 25 general election and commanded the loyalty of a majority of lawmakers in the Lower House of the Parliament, will take oath of the office on Saturday. In his speech, the recently-elected PM clarified that there would be no reconciliation with any ‘dacoit’, pledging that there would be a strict accountability in the country.

In his inaugural address, Imran Khan expressed that he would respond to the queries inside the assembly twice a month. “Will stand in the national assembly twice every month to answer the questions about my leadership,” PTI chairman said.

Imran Khan also highlighted that he was not backed by any military dictator and had secured victory on his own. “I don’t belong to any political family nor was I brought up by a military dictator,” he said.

He outlined that he had struggled the most among any politician, however, mentioned that only Quaid-e-Azam made such a struggle. “I did not climb on any dictator’s shoulders; I reached this place after struggling for 22 years. Only one leader struggled more than me and that was my hero, Jinnah,” asserted the newly elected premier.

Imran Khan expressed that the people of Pakistan have waited for 70 years for this change to unfold. When Imran Khan was addressing the assembly, members from the opposition benches kept shouting ‘vote ko izzat do’ and tried their best to disrupt the speech, however, Imran continued his speech flanked by the party loyalists.

Imran Khan also said that if the opposition wants to demonstrate sit-ins, they will be provided with containers by PTI. “Just like I revolutionized cricket, I will make the election process neutral so that both the winners and losers accept the result,” The newly-elected PM said.

The premier expressed that no matter what, he would not be blackmailed by the protest of the opposition. Regarding the much-debated rigging allegations, Imran expressed that those having reservations should move to the election commission of Pakistan or the Supreme Court.

He thanked the youth of the country and announced that he would strive hard to create employment opportunities for them. The newly elected premier also mocked the opposition and challenged PML-N and JUI-F leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman to stage a sit-in at D-chowk, even for a month.
