ISLAMABAD - Secretary Pakistan Taekwondo Federation (PTF) Lt. Col Waseem Ahmed said that over 300 male and female players would take part in the 6th Korean National Ranking Taekwondo Championship as the bouts will be kicked off from Wednesday (today) at Hamidi Hall, Pakistan Sports Complex Islamabad. While addressing a press conference here at Pakistan Sports Complex Media Centre, he said that four teams from Punjab and three teams from Army would compete for the title of national taekwondo event. WAPDA, Railway, Islamabad, NWFP, Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Army, Navy, Pakistan Police, Azad Jammu & Kashmir (AKJ) and Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) have arrived here at venue," he said. Responding to a question regarding the assistance of Pakistan Sports Board, which is only sports organisation to facilitate national sports federations, he lamented that PSB asked to pay Rs.50, 000 in advance for using sports facility of Hameedi Hall. "However, we had organized the 5th edition at same venue but at that occasion they provided us all these facilities freely," he viewed. Lt. Col Waseem Ahmed further said that men would compete in eight weight categories competitions including Fin, Fly, Light, Welter, Middle, Heavy, Bantam and Feather weight and girls' bouts would also be held in all same eight categories. "It will be good opportunity for the budding player to excel at national level. PTF is focusing at grass root level to provide maximum facilities for the promotion of game," he said.He said that Pakistani players produced remarkable results in 2008 in the international competitions. "We select the players on merit and after analysing the performance of the players in the national fixtures. Korean coaches and local coaches also observe the performance of players during the camps," he said.He said that the Military AttachT of Korean embassy in Islamabad would grace the open ceremony as a chief guest while Korean Ambassador will distribute the prizes in the closing ceremony. "Federal Minister for Sports Pir Aftab Hussain will also be the guest on December 19 on the last day.
