Forget about the Jiayalas being recruited in their thousands in various corporations - behold, a list of Jiyala judges is being prepared to replace supreme court judges that show signs of being independent. Is this a step towards making the judiciary independent, or making it 'yours most obedient'? These judges will be just about as independent as Babar Awan, Sherry Rahman and Farzana Raja are. When Aitzaz Ahsan accused Babar Awan of turning his back on the lawyers' movement despite his earlier commitment, Mr Awan is reported to have said, ""It is more honourable to follow party discipline than to honour a commitment". How did he know what exactly the party discipline was? After all, his (original) party chairperson had said on record, "Iftikhar Chaudry is my Chief Justice". Did she later tell him - quietly on the side - to ignore that motivated statement? Like she also conveyed to Dr Qadeer Khan and the Jehadis to ignore her motivated statements? Unfortunately the Jehadis got confused as to which of her statements to believe, the earlier or later. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, December 6.
