KARACHI  - MQM Quaid Altaf Hussain phoned President Asif Ali Zardari Sunday evening and discussed with him host of issues including law and order situation in Karachi, energy crisis and economic turmoil in the country.Spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar said the two leaders discussed the situation prevailing in the country. Altaf congratulated the president for pursuing the policy of reconciliation which he said led to the formation of coalition democratic government approaching the successful completion of its constitutionally mandated term of five years. He said as coalition partner the MQM would continue to support the government in pursuit of democratic ideals, the supremacy of the parliament and common objective of people’s welfare.The president thanked the MQM chief for his continued support to the government and said PPP government was hoping for his party’s assistance on all important national issues in future as well. The president said that the success of reconciliation policy also owed to the cooperation and understanding of political forces in the country particularly the parties in the coalition government. President Zardari said he was very pleased that the democratic government was nearing the completion of its full term and was poised to hold free and fair elections in the country within the constitutionally mandated time frame.Senator Farhatullah Babar said the president, during talks with Altaf, also appreciated the efforts made by all political parties including the MQM, whether in the government or in the opposition, for their positive contributions in the bi-partisan parliamentary committee on election reforms to ensure free and fair elections in the country under the auspices of an independent and empowered Election Commission. He said it was a good omen for the forthcoming elections that, for the first time in history of the country, the chief election commissioner had already been appointed with the consensus of the Opposition.The spokesperson quoted the president as also expressing hope that with the consensus measures recently taken including the consensus over the appointment of the CEC, CNIC based voters' lists, the provision of a neutral caretaker setup in consultation with the Opposition and the setting up of a bi-partisan Parliamentary Committee on election reforms, the specter to manipulate power transfer would be banished forever.Staff reporter adds: Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad and Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Bilawal House here on Sunday. PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was also present on the occasion.The meeting took stock of various issues including law and order situation in the province. The president appreciated the efforts being made to maintain law and order, and directed that steps be taken to provide foolproof security to the people.Reviewing the progress made by the Committee for Rehabilitation of Victims of Terrorism, President Zardari ordered to expedite the compensation process to the terrorism victims, especially widows and hapless families suffering from the scourge of militancy and terrorism.
