ISLAMABAD
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif Tuesday tasked the Cabinet Committee on Energy to devise a comprehensive load management mechanism to improve electricity supply by the summer of 2015.
Premier Sharif passed these directions while chairing fifth meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy and reviewed progress on the decisions taken in the previous meetings.
He appreciated the steps taken by the Ministry of Water and Power in saving Rs27 billion through better management and by minimising their losses.
The prime minister said that more efforts must be made in order to produce energy at low cost making it affordable for the common man. “We still have a long way to go and will have to undertake all steps necessary in this regard,” he said.
The meeting laid emphasis on tapping of alternate sources of energy and on shifting furnace oil based GENCOs and IPPs to natural gas.  The prime minister laid stress on employing cost-effective and most efficient energy resources for meeting energy needs of the country in short, medium and long-terms.
Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar, Chief Minister Punjab Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, Federal Minister for Petroleum Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, Minister of State for Petroleum Jam Kamal Khan, Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali, Advisor to PM on National Security Sartaj Aziz, Special Assistant to PM on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, Secretary Water and Power, Secretary Petroleum and Secretary Information attended the meeting along with other senior government officials.
