France will give Haiti, which was devastated by an earthquake last month, 326 million euros (446 million dollars) in aid, visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Wednesday. France's aid package includes the cancellation of 56 million euros (76 million dollars) in debt owed by Haiti to its former colonizer. Sarkozy is on the first-ever visit by a French president to this former French colony in the Caribbean, which fought for and won its independence in 1804, becoming the first independent black republic. He was scheduled to survey the devastated Haitian capital and other affected areas by helicopter Wednesday, and also was to visit a field hospital set up by French aid workers.
