ISLAMABAD The visiting US Under-Secretary of Defence for Policy, Ms Michele Flournoy Tuesday met with the Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani at the GHQ and discussed matters of mutual interest. According to the US Embassy sources, Ms Flournoy discussed Pak-US bilateral security relationship during her meeting with General Kayani. The sources informed that issues pertaining to the Pak-US defence cooperation, situation in Afghanistan, regional security situation, war against terror and transfer of drone technology to Pakistan came under discussion during the meeting. However credible military sources maintained that the visiting US dignitary had taken General Kayani on board over the US five-year counterterrorism programme being designed by Pentagon for supporting anti-terror efforts. Purpose of her visit to Pakistan was basically to assess defence needs of the country for the next five years, sources disclosed to TheNation. The sources further informed that the five-year US programme envisaged provision of arms, ammunition and training. According to the US Embassy, during the past three years US has provided 14 F-16 fighter aircraft, 10 Mi-17 helicopters, more than 450 vehicles for Pakistans Frontier Corps, hundreds of night vision goggles, day/night scopes, radios, and thousands of protective vests and first-aid items to Pakistans security forces. In addition, the US funded and provided training for more than 370 Pakistani military officers in a wide range of leadership and development programmes covering topics such as counterterrorism, intelligence, logistics, medical, flight safety, and military law. The visit of the US Under-Secretary for Defence Policy coincided with delivery of military equipment donated by the US to Pakistan which included donation of five high speed maritime interdiction patrol boats to Pakistans Maritime Security Agency (MSA) as well as 48 self-propelled field artillery cannons gifted to the Pakistan Army.
