'Face-saving exercise' in Zainab case regrettable

Khurshid Shah says Punjab failed to respond to situation head-on

KASUR - PPP stalwart and leader of Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah Tuesday said that the failure to arrest killer(s) of Zainab despite lapse of eight days calls into question capability and efficiency of the Punjab government.

"The government is picking up innocent persons as a face-saving exercise in the Zainab murder which is regrettable," veteran politician declared while talking to media along with father of Zainab here on Tuesday.

The PPP leader had come to the residence of slain Zainab to sympathise with the bereaved parents of the minor girl who was kidnapped, raped and murdered last week.

Khurshid Shah pointed out that though such horrendous incidents occur across the world, governments concerned tackle such situation head-on and they never appear as helpless as the Punjab government is.

He said that it is unfortunate that Zainab murder case was discussed in the British parliament.

The Opposition Leader in NA said that the government is responsible to protect life, honour and property of the public but unfortunately the Punjab authorities are only fond of firing gunshots on people when they protest against incidents like the brutal murder and rape of the minor.

"Had the government taken such incidents serious in the past, this unfortunate tragedy will not have unfolded," he criticised.

Khurshid Shah called people involved in such cases as ruthless killers, saying they must be arrested at the earliest and made an example for others.

On the other hand, PTI central leader Firdous Ashiq Awan, Punjab Child Protection Bureau Chairperson Saba Sadiq, Khadim Hussain Kasuri and Rana Asad also visited the house of the slain minor girl.
