It is so sad that our country continues to be in the grip of the international capitalist mafia. Sixty-two years on, there is no end in sight as far as our dependence on the world lending agencies is concerned. They have turned us into permanent beggars outside their doors. In the modern times, all right-thinking nations have, first and foremost, ensured cheap power supply for their economies. Thus, 80% of electricity is being produced with coal in China. Great Britain and France, on the other hand, get 80% of their energy from nuclear resources. India is quickly building dam after dam. We must be the only country in the world that, despite a constantly declining economy, is producing most of its electricity from oil. It is like trying to feed our people with cakes and pastries imported from France instead of indigenous wheat bread. The foreign money lenders would never want that we should become self-sufficient in energy because then we will be rid of their manipulating influence, Thus if we launch world tenders for the construction of a hydroelectric or coal-fired plant, we will get no response to this tender. However, if we advertise for an oil-run powerhouse we shall be flooded with construction offers. Our oil-run IPPs are already a major source of destruction of our economy. -WAQAR HUSSAIN, Muzaffargarh, via e-mail, July 8.
