LAHORE - The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) claimed to have gunned down two proclaimed offenders (POs) in a police encounter near Sagian Bridge in Shahdara police precincts here on Friday. The same accused had killed Hameedan Bibi, 60, Saima, 25, and Uzma on April 4, 2010 near Sagian Bridge when the women refused to pay them the forced tax. On the same day, a case was lodged against the killers under sections 302, 324, 148, 149 and under 7 ATA of Pakistan Penal Code in Shahdara Police Station. The CIA police said that the criminals riding on a motorbike were on their way to kill the eyewitnesses of the triple-murder incident. But the criminals, identified as Akmal alias Akali and Tariq alias Papu, themselves got killed by the police in the wee hours of Friday. The police maintained that the accused were history-sheeters and, were involved in dozens of crimes including murder, robbery-cum-rape, dacoity-cum-murder, gang rape and abduction committed in various districts across the country. CIA Inspector Bashir Niazi told The Nation that the police on a tip-off established a checkpoint near Sagian Bridge. The accused opened indiscriminate firing on the police team when they waved them to stop for their identification, he added. The Inspector further said that the CIA chased the accused, who fell down on each other after their bike slipped while taking a turn towards Muzamil Nursery. Instead of courting arrest, the accused continued firing; police also retaliated in the same manner. As a result of which both the hardened criminals died on the spot, he added. The CIA police also recovered two sophisticated weapons from their possession. On the other hand, the family of the deceased on Thursday evening while staging a protest demonstration outside the Governors House alleged that the police had arrested Akmal and Tariq from Haiderabad some days back and had been planning to kill them in an encounter. The bodies were shifted to the morgue for autopsies. Further investigations are underway.
