The new government of Nawaz Sharif has rightly identified that oil-fired power plants, installed by the previous government are the real problem, and have largely contributed in escalating the circular debt. Now government has come up with some ambitious plans to convert large sized oil based power plants to coal. Unfortunately, the new steam turbine power plants being installed at Nandipur and Chichoki Mallian are also not based on coal. Government should immediately plan to convert them to coal otherwise the same problem will be repeated and the government will face continued energy crises. Last but not least, the plan of economic overhaul that Mian Nawaz Sharif is looking forward to will remain a forlorn dream until and unless he orders immediate construction of Kalabagh Dam, the lifeline project lauded by both local and international experts. The former KPK government of ANP, -- which was receiving round the clock supply of electricity – had no scruples in opposing this vital project without any regard or concern for the masses suffering without electricity. It should be held responsible and dragged in the court for keeping the nation in darkness. When will we get the better of our cowardice and learn to call a spade a spade. ENGR.
