Living in stone-age

The tribesmen in NWFP remain as primitive as they were a century ago. The hatred among the tribes is so severe that they flare up on small, little matters. The latest conflict between Chakrani tribe and Qalandari tribe erupted when 'one tribe's dog bit a donkey belonging to the other' (The Nation June 2). On the other hand, the justice of tribal elders who comprise the jirgas to settle the disputes, does not rise beyond ordering the marriage of  three to ten year old girls of one tribe to the grown up or even older men of the other. Such acts are enough to disgrace the country in the eyes of the foreigners who would be right in commenting that 'the people of Pakistan are stupid fools still living in the stone-age.'-RAFI NASIM, Lahore, via e-mail, June 3.
