I am immensely shocked to read comments of Zamir Sheikh against ex army personnel. He has openly debunked the generals and other high-ranking officers of the army who are now retired from services. He appears to be totally ignorant about the realities. Army interventions have never been popular in the army. But the fact of life is that the coup making generals have been imposed on us by USA to serve its interests. Very few in the army have benefited by martial law, most have remained totally committed to their profession. There are generals like General Mirza Aslam Beg who had every opportunity to continue as a Martial Law Administrator. But he opted to pass on the power to a civilian, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, who was Chairman of the Senate at that time. The nation should appreciate this act. He criticized the civilian government at the time of the first Gulf war (1991) and said that USA is not being persuaded to seek a regional solution to problem rather than attack Iraq. He also predicted at the time that the next victim would be Iran and then possibly Pakistan. You cannot condemn and tar all army officers with the same brush. -NAYAB KHAN, Fateh Jang, via e-mail, June 9.
