The previous PML-Q and PPP governments are responsible for lack of irrigation water, especially in the tail-end areas in the district.

PML-N MPA Ch Mehmoodul Hassan Cheema said this while addressing a convention of farmers organised by the Agri Forum Pakistan (AFP) Rahim Yar Khan chapter here the other day.

The farmers’ community from Sadiqabad, Khanpur and Liaqatpur tehsils participated in the convention.

The MPA said that the MQM and Sindh nationalist parties always highlighted anti-Kalabagh Dam issue for their politics which was indeed need of the hour. He said that there were many reasons for lack of irrigation water in the district and he would raise the issue in the Punjab Assembly.

Cheema said that military was using the irrigation water from Abbasia Link Canal for the land provided for the exercise purposes in tehsil Liaqatpur.

He disclosed that Pak Army started cultivation on thousands of acres land located upstream of head Qasim Wala, so the farmers of remaining areas of the tehsil were deprived of their right.

He said that he would take up the issue in the assembly and would meet the prime minister for solution to problems being faced by the farmers.

He said that he would raise voice against the illegally increasing in the size of a water outlet near Chak-88/P by PML-N MNA Maiza Hameed Gujjar.

He also assured the participants that he would request the central government to increase the funds for the restoration of the Wapda scarp tube-wells.

Speaking on the occasion, former PCGA Chairman Haji Ibrahim said that rotation system of irrigation water had badly damaged the sowing of cotton in the district and the Irrigation Department was not serious to provide irrigation water in tail end areas.

AFP Bahawalpur President Saifullah Niazi, Sadiqabad GS Hakum Sanjarpuri, Khanpur President Muhammad Akmal and Liaqatpur President Aamir Farooq Yazdani also spoke on the occasion.
