Loss Angeles: PETROLHEAD Simon Cowell is going back to basics — after buying a “no frills” sportscar which doesn’t even have a roof.

The multi-millionaire music mogul is usually seen in his £300,000 chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce or £850,000 Bugatti Veyron.  He has shelled out around £30,000 for the British-built Caterham Seven, which has no air-con, electric windows, carpet or even a radio.

But the stripped-down Superlight 400 rockets from 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds. Cowell, 53, instantly fell in love with the Surrey-based firm’s “boy’s toy” after test-driving it last week.–TS

The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent supremo ordered one on the spot, describing the pint-sized motor as “unbelievable” and “one of the best cars in the world”.

Once the vehicle is built at Caterham’s workshop it will be shipped out to the States — so that Simon can drive it in the Los Angeles sunshine. TS
