LAHORE As the Pakistan Cricket Board is trying to find a suitable player for handing over the captaincy, contrasting reports are circulating in cricket circles which suggested that Shahid Afridi, Abdul Razzaq, Misbahul Haq and Salman Butt are the front-runner for the job while some reports said that Afridi has suggested Razzaqs name. However, chances are that Afridi would hold the control of the team for the World T20 Cup to be held in the West Indies from April 30. Only recently PCB chairman Ijaz Butt held a detailed meeting only with Afridi over captaincy and his probation period also came under discussion. Afridi and several other players were banned, fined and put on probation for grouping in the team during the recent Australia tour, which Pakistan lost badly. The PCB wanted to have a young captain who would lead the Pakistan team in all the formats of the game. But Afridi has taken break from Test cricket and in case Salman or Razzaq are be named captains, they too were not suitable for one of the three formats of the game. Take the case of Razzaq, the PCB has not been selecting the veteran all-rounder for the Test team lately while Salman was dropped from the previous T20 teams but now he is part of the World Cup squad. At the moment the captaincy issue remained in limbo and votes are being counted in favour of the players suitable for captaincy. And with the passage of time it seems that the PCB will name captain for the T20 first and then decide a long term captain for all formats of the game. That was the reason the PCB handed over the list of players to the newly-inducted chief selector to make the announcement. Reports suggested that Yawar Saeed, who resigned as manager of the team due to poor health, has again been named at the post for the World Cup and he along with Saleem Jaffar prepared the team without the say of other selectors or their signatures on the final list of players. The chief selector said in his first press conference that the team will be selected on merit and a day after his induction as chief selector he named the team raising many an eye-brows over merit claims.
