KARACHI - A woman was killed and six others, including five children were injured, in explosion at a garbage dump in Garden West area of Soldier Bazaar on Tuesday. According to police, the blast occurred in a narrow lane near Lyari Expressway at Chandni Chowk, which is used by the local residents as convenient route to cross the road. The victims were crossing the pathway at the time of the low-intensity explosion, injuring seven of them. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital where Samina alias Sumaya (35), wife of Baig Khan and a mother of two, succumbed to her injuries while a child, Shah son of Osama, is stated to be in critical condition. Samina, resident of Shahjahanabad Gulbahar, was a housemaid and was returning back to her home at the time of blast, while the injured woman, Naureen (30) wife of Aslam, was also a maid. She has four children and is a resident of Old Golimar. The other injured are: Mahek (6), Naveed (4) son of Haider, Omair (14) son of Abdul Rehman and Shiraz (12) son of Ejaz. Security officials have so far been unable to ascertain the nature of blast. They have termed the explosion as accidental. It is believed that the children while playing hit an explosive device, which resulted in an explosion. Bomb Disposal Squad Sub-Inspector Ghulam Mustafa said at least 200gm of explosive material was used but he also expressed hi inability to give details, saying the investigation was in an initial stage. After the incident, heavy contingent of law enforcement agencies personnel rushed to the spot and cordoned off the entire locality. They, however, were also unaware about the nature of blast, and suspected that it was some abandoned material dumped at the site by suspected militants. Meanwhile, panic gripped the City after various TV channels on aired the news of the blast.
