Judiciary in Pakistan was never as independent as it has been under the present Chief Justice of Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry. No act is too small or irrelevant for CJ not to discern, nothing escapes his suo moto notice. However, the public would like to know who will reprimand the law upholders when they break the law? There have been many cases of misdemeanor by the guardians of the law, the practicing lawyer community. They have indulged in hooliganism mostly in the premises of courts. They have developed a trend whereby they settle score with their adversaries’ not through legal means but by resorting to rowdy behavior and unabated use of physical force. Cops in uniform visiting the courts are a favourite target for them, as these young lawyers are confident that their illegal act would be settled latter through amicable negotiations. The media has regularly reported, mostly in parts of Punjab, instances of lawyers resorting to beating of judges of the lower courts for doling judgments not to their liking. Most conspicuous case of unruly behavior was witnessed in Faisalabad recently, where lawyers demanding opening of a branch of the High Court in their town, locked the main gates and offices of the judges inside. Of course, none of the courts functioned during the 10 days strike. On Thursday, a lawyer with two supporters not only thrashed the Cantonment Executive Officer, Rawalpindi Cantonment, he commandeered his ever obliging lawyer community to come to join him in this violent act. It is time the Chief Justice reined in the lawyers’ community to follow the law of the land and set an example of what they have learnt in their law books.SAYED GB SHAH BOKHARI, Peshawar, March 13.
