KE’s coal conversion project: Nepra finally gives licence

KARACHI (PR): K-Electric is pleased to learn that NEPRA has finally approved the generation licence of K-Energy to undertake the coal conversion project of 420 MW at Bin Qasim Power Station 1. This issue had been pending for over a year and finally, NEPRA has granted the license to K-Energy.

K-Electric’s press statement said that the first ever Coal Fired EPC in the country was signed between K-Energy and Harbin Electric of China back in 2013 where Harbin would construct new coal-fired boilers on these 2 units of BQPS 1. Harbin Electric International is one of China’s largest enterprises in power project contracting and export of power equipment. This project will be completed in 2 and a half years with an approximate cost of USD 400 million.

Press statement also said that these coal-based units are equipped with emission controlled technologies in compliance with all applicable local and international environmental regulations. KE has been rehabilitating the old plants and units that the new management had acquired back in 2009 and with these coal-fired boilers KE would be the first to generate electricity via coal.

Spokesman K-Electric said, “Issuance of Generation License is a major breakthrough and now NEPRA will determine tariff for the project which will ultimately provide relief to the end consumer. KE believes in producing electricity from coal and will provide fuel security, diversification and reduction in cost of generation by substituting expensive fuel oil with affordable fuel in the existing fleet of K-Electric”.

Providing details the press statement said that this was done with a view to showcase KE’s commitment to pioneer coal conversion and which will also help reduce the power tariff by utilizing low cost fuel sources for its electricity generation.

Telenor deploys cutting edge technology at SafaGold Mall

The inauguration of state-of-the-art technology was marked by setting up an experience center in the mall by Telenor Pakistan for its customers. It is pertinent to note that Huawei LampSite solution won the Best Mobile Infrastructure award.

 in the Mobile Technology category at GSMA Global Mobile Awards held recently in Barcelona, Spain. The solution is designed to be more scalable, flexible, as well as easier to deploy and manage, compared to traditional distributed antenna system (DAS) solutions.

Wateen, TCI sign regional

interconnect agreement

LAHORE (PR): Wateen Telecom, Pakistan’s largest long-haul fiber operator, and Telecommunication Infrastructure Company of Iran, the sole provider of telecommunication infrastructure services in Iran, have signed an interconnect agreement for provisioning of data and voice services in the region.

Under the agreement duly signed at Capacity Middle East in Dubai, Wateen and TICI intend to improve the services to their customers through high capacity international terrestrial cable connectivity at Taftan-Zahedan area.

The landmark agreement is the first between the two countries and will enable the cross border Interconnect between Iran-Pakistan for IPLC transit and buying/selling of capacity and further enable capacities on submarine cable systems in Pakistan & Iran, capacities on domestic cable systems in Pakistan & Iran, capacities on terrestrial cable systems towards Europe& connectivity to Afghanistan via Iran.

While speaking at Capacity Middle East, Junaid Sheikh, GM Enterprise and Global Carrier Business – Wateen Telecom, stated “We welcome this historic arrangement for sharing of traffic between the two countries and putting in place building blocks for a new transit route for connecting Pakistan and Iran to the region and onto Europe. Warid appoints Farid as chief strategy officer

LAHORE (PR): Warid Telecom has announced the appointment of its new Chief Strategy Officer, Farid Ahmad. Farid will be primarily responsible for overall corporate strategy, pricing & segments, business intelligence & analysis, international business and new business revenue streams/projects.

Farid has experience spanning over 20 years in telecom, IT and fertilizer companies. He was associated with Mobilink for over 10 years and his last assignment with Mobilink was as VP business analysis & planning. During his association with Mobilink, Farid served the organization in various roles such as VP Marketing, Head of Business Analysis & Planning and Head of Marketing Strategy & Planning.

Prior to joining Warid, Farid was serving Telenor in the capacity of Director Marketing. He is an MBA gold medalist from LUMS and he has done his Bachelors in Engineering from UET, Lahore.

Pak Elektron organises event

IMechE SAR meeting

LAHORE (PR): The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is headquartered in London and has operations around the world. The institution has over 100,000 members in more than 140 countries. Pakistan Group of IMechE hosted the Southern Asia Region Meeting 2015 on 13 - 14th March in Lahore for the first time in Pakistan.
