Teen arrested for ‘acid attack’

LAHORE -Police investigators on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a teenage boy who unleashed an acid attack on a schoolteacher in Green Town.

The suspect was identified as 18-year-old Saif Ali, who fled after throwing acid on the face of a young schoolteacher a couple of days ago. The suspect told police investigators that he committed the heinous crime after being spurned in love.  If convicted, the suspect would be awarded life-imprisonment under anti-acid attack laws. Eighteen-year-old Maryam Nazir, a local schoolteacher, is still recovering at a hospital in Lahore. She was returning from school when she was attacked at the doorstep.

The victim sustained serious burns on her face and hands. Sajjad Rashid, head of the investigation police at Green Town police station, said the attacker wanted to develop an affair with the victim.  The latest acid attack took place near Bagrian Chowk in the limits of Green Town police on Friday. Earlier, police registered a criminal case (under section 336/B of the PPC) against unidentified attackers after recording statement of the victim.
