LAHORE - Justice Umar Ata Bandial of the Lahore High Court Tuesday called for a reply within two weeks from the federal government to a petition challenging the proposed levy of Reformed General Sales Tax (RGST), which in view of the petitioner, is bound to bring about extraordinary price hike so the court may restrain the government from imposing the same. The petition was moved on behalf of Save Judiciary Committee. Petitioners counsel Ch Mateenul Haq submitted the levy of RGST would further add to the misery of already poverty-stricken people of Pakistan. He said citizens were already paying 16 per cent sales tax on all utility bills and RGST would multiply the sufferings of common people. He said the govt should improve its mechanism to collect the income tax and also bring the big fishes to tax net sparing the poor from any additional burden. He said the rich in the country would not be burdened by the RGST which would be imposed on the common man whose backbone is already broken by financial burden. He requested the RGST be declared unconstitutional and illegal and the government may be directed not to bring the same.
