OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE Land mafia has restarted construction work on Central Governments land, situated at Defence Road Harbanspura in connivance with the revenue officials after recent operation against illegal constructions on such land, it is learnt. Insiders of Revenue Department said that the mafia comprises of influential persons of the area occupied land owned by Central Government illegally from a couple years and such practice was continued unchecked by the government departments concerned. They said that higher authorities of Revenue Department took notice of the practice of such illegal occupation by land mafia and started operation for retrieval of land and demolished a number of unlawfully erected structures. They said that a Revenue Officer and in charge of the operation retrieved precious government land worth millions of rupees from the land mafia. Later, the officials have to stop and leave operation unaccomplished due to interference of a local MPA of ruling PML-N, they said adding that such MPA also succeeded to get transfer orders of the Revenue Officer from the higher authorities. However, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif took notice of such interference and ordered the higher authorities of District Administration to probe the matter and submit a report of findings. On the directions of CM, Additional Collector Nadir Chatha and Assistant Commissioner Shalimar Saima Afzal reached Defence Road for probing the matter and checking the reconstruction by land mafia. The team of officers also examined the retrieved land, situated near Nazir Garden. However, the members of mafia stopped construction disappeared from the scene before the arrival of officers because revenue officials informed the members of land mafia about the raid so that they could stop construction work, they concluded.
