ISLAMABAD - An important troika meeting among President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani was held at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday night. According to an official handout, the meeting discussed current security situation in the country, and the president also hosted dinner for the PM and the COAS, it added. But reports aired on private TV channels said the meeting also discussed the controversy over a letter allegedly written by President Asif Ali Zardari to senior US officials regarding differences between civilian and military establishment. It was reliably learnt that Husain Haqqani, who is said to have forwarded the letter, has been summoned back to end the confusion over the issue and he would reach Islamabad by the end of next week. The sources said that Ambassador Haqqani had been summoned by the president to clarify his position that whether he had handed over the alleged memo to a US-based businessman Mansoor Ijaz or not. The controversy has caused ripples in the armed forces as the move had been seen as sheer breach of the national security. The sources said that the controversy involving the alleged letter also came up for discussion in a meeting on Tuesday between President Zardari and the army chief. That meeting was followed by another important meeting of US Ambassador Munter with President Zardari and reportedly they also discussed the issue.
