Sindh to consult Opposition for new LG polls date

KARACHI - The Sindh government has decided to consult the opposition parties in Sindh Assembly to finalise the date of local government elections with consensus.
Before approaching the opposition parties, the Sindh government’s ministerial committee formed to evolve strategy on the subject will meet tomorrow (Monday) to formally discuss the date of LG polls.  In this regard, Senior Education Minister Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, who leads the ministerial committee, said the committee will meet tomorrow to discuss the date of LG polls in the province.
It may be noted the Election Commission of Pakistan, last week, unveiled the dates of LG elections with January 18 in Sindh and January 30 in Punjab.
It is expected the ministerial committee and Sindh cabinet in its scheduled meeting will finalise the date of March next year. The Sindh government will suggest the date of local government elections in the meeting of the Election Commission scheduled on 19th of this month in Islamabad. The Sindh government will also recommend the Election Commission to conduct the local government elections on same day in all the four provinces.
Before going to finalise the date of LG elections, sources said Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and his cabinet ministers will contact the opposition parties and take them into confidence on the new date of local government elections.
Sources said all the opposition parties were agreed with a proposal to hold the local government elections in February or March.
