PESHAWAR - At least seven people were injured when doctors and paramedical staff at the Lady Reading Hospital scuffled with each other over ‘occupying’ the newly-constructed hostel by young doctors on Monday.

The clash erupted when young doctors of LRH ‘illegally’ occupied the newly-constructed hostel of paramedics without permission of the administration.

Talking to The Nation, President of Paramedics Association in the Lady Reading Hospital Siraj Barki said the hostel was constructed by the administration for paramedical staff as they had no accommodation facility on the premises of the hospital. He said the hostel was ready for inauguration when trainee medical officers forcibly occupied it.

He said when they asked the doctors to vacate the hostel they (doctors) attacked paramedical staff and several persons including paramedics sustained injuries in the clashes.

He added that there were four hostels for doctors in the Lady Reading Hospital but paramedics had none.

When contacted, information secretary of Young Doctors Association Dr Amjad said there was a lady hostel on this place which was demolished by the administration but they did not construct a new hostel for lady doctors.

He mentioned that due to shortage of accommodation facilities lady doctors were given accommodation in male hostels which was against the Pakhtun traditions.

He suggested that the administration should allot this hostel to female doctors as the paramedics had no right to stay inside the hospital. He vowed that if this hostel was allotted to paramedics, the Young Doctors Association will chalk out future line of action.

When asked, spokesman of the Lady Reading Hospital Jamil Shah said the hostel was constructed for paramedics but doctor had some reservations regarding the accommodation of female colleagues. He said that scuffle erupted between paramedics and doctors which caused injuries to seven persons.

He added that hostel had been sealed and FIR had also been lodged against the responsible. He said that an enquiry committee under the supervision of health minister will probe the matter which will punish the responsible persons who violated the rules and regulations.
