Each day I wonder if the Islamic Republic of Pakistan is a secular country or the Islamic country. Some believe that it was not created in the name of Islam rather it was a secular state founded by the secular Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Some believe that the Islamic slogan was used as a political jargon but it was never meant to be a real Islamic state. However, our constitution states Pakistan as ‘Islamic Republic of Pakistan’, Islam is a state religion and Sovereignty Belongs to Allah. Recent comment by Nawaz Sharif of ‘liberal Pakistan’ has once again ignited the discussion. After 68 years of creation, we are still confused about being secular state and Islamic state. Now, time has come to clear thing up and it should be brought up in the Parliament and amend the constitution (if needed) and make it clear to the people of Pakistan.
