ISLAMABAD-Ahsan Ayaz made a huge upset by outclassing PSA top 100 ranked player Shahjahan Khan 3-0 in the $25,000 Serena Hotels-Chief of Air Staff (CAS) International Squash Championship final qualifying round match played here at the Mushaf Squash Complex on Wednesday.

Shahjahan started the first game on a high tempo and raced on to take 4-0 lead. After early set back, Ahsan settled down well and kept Shahjahan on the run, as his drop shots and lobs were paying great dividend and helped him first level the score at 4-4 and then to take 6-4 lead.

Shahjahan then leveled the score at 6-6, but it was all he could get from the game, as Ahsan won next five points in a row to win the first game 11-6 in 13 minutes. It was completely one-way traffic in the second game, as left-hander Ahsan played exceptionally well to take game 11-4 in just 4 minutes.

The third game saw both the players giving tough time to each other and making the game a see saw battle. At one stage, Ahsan was leading 9-6 and was set to clinch the game easily, but Shahjahan fought back and reduced the margin to 8-9. With the backing of crowd, PSF secretary and coaching staff present on the occasion, Ashan responded in style and first made it 10-8 and then played a match-winning shot to register an impressive victory.

Former Asian junior individual squash champion Syed Ali Bukhari was awarded walk over against Asim Khan. Jordanian Ahmad Al-Saraj had to work very hard to overcome Kashif Asif 3-1 in 44 minutes. Saraj won the first game 13-11 in 13 minutes and took the second 11-6 in 9 minutes. Kashif then staged a comeback and won the third game 11-7 in 12 minutes. But after playing so well, Kashif failed to deliver in the fourth game which provided Saraj a chance to wrap up the game 11-8 and the match.

Amaad Fareed stunned top 100 ranked PSA player Kh Adil Maqbool 3-1 in 22 minutes. Maqbool won the first game 11-9 but Ammad then bounced back to win the second game 11-8 and was leading 8-5 in the third game when Maqbool retired due to hamstring injury. Farhan Mehboob brushed aside Bilal Zakir 3-0 in just 18 minutes. Farhan won 11-2, 11-2, 11-6.

Zahir Shah thumped M Farhan 3-1 in 33 minutes, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-8 while Israr Ahmed hard to work hard to beat Abbas Shoukat 3-2 in one hour. Israr won 12-10, 6-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-4 while in the last match of the day, Austrian Aqeel Rehman edged out Zeeshan Khan 3-0 in 35 minutes, 11-9, 12-10, 11-6. The final qualifying round will start today (Thursday) at 11am.
