Algeria's state-run news agency says flash floods in the desert regions of southern Algeria have killed at least eight people. The APS agency said Friday that authorities estimate the victims drowned over the last 48 hours in and around the Sahara desert town of Bechar around 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) south of the capital, Algiers. Before the report, the Interior Ministry said 65 people had drowned this month in floods caused by heavy rains in Algeria, most in the southern town of Ghardaia.
