Energy potential of river Indus

What kind of a people are we despite blessed with innumerable opportunities in terms of cheap power sources likehydro power, solar, wind, hydro and thermal we are not making use of them. The river Indus has a generation potential of about 25,000 MW at Skardu, Bunji, Bhasha, Dasso and unfortunately at Kalabagh. I have used the world unfortunately because for years, this issue has remained a political football, even though it has been rated by experts, engineers and scientists as the best project to pull the country out of the energy crisis. Where as in total, there is estimated capacity of about 60,000 MW in Khyber Pakhtunkha, Gilgit-Baltistan, Punjab, AJK, Sindh and Balochistan, only 11 percent is being utilised. After the completion of Tarbela Dam in seventies, we could only make use of Ghazi Barothas 1450MW, while the demand for power kept on rising due to population growth and the industrial/agriculture sector demands. We need to construct large dams particularly Kalabagh Dam without any further delay. ENGR.A RAUF CHAUDHRY, Lahore, October 13.
