LAHORE Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court Thursday adjourned to September 22 further hearing of a petition against the appointment of administrators replacing the Nazims in the province. The Court held that local government elections and appointment of administrators was a serious matter and the law officer on the next date of hearing should come under instruction to argue on this proposition. For the petitioners, former Nazims, advocate Fawad Chaudhary contended that Punjab Government was not willing to hold the LG elections despite the fact Prime Minister had categorically said that it was a provincial subject and its responsibility. He said the presence of the unelected administrators in the local governments runs counter to the constitutional theme of LG system. He said the situation had now gone to an extent that not only development funds but the funds collected to help the flood affectees had also been placed at the disposal of these unelected persons acting as administrators wherein the fears of embezzlement had increased. He prayed to the court for removing the administrators and restoring the LG system by means of holding local body elections.
